QuSoft, the Amsterdam Research Center for Quantum Software, is looking for a principal investigator at junior faculty (tenure track) level. We focus on the area of quantum many-body theory and quantum simulation. The new faculty, who will be affiliated with the Institute for Theoretical Physics Amsterdam (ITFA), will have strong ties within ITFA but equally with groups in experimental physics (ultra-cold atoms in particular), chemistry, mathematics and computer science and with the QuSoft center.
Quantum simulation is an increasingly important tool in the analysis of quantum many-body systems, including quantum materials and quantum chemistry. While digital quantum simulation employs a gate-based programmable quantum computer, analogue quantum simulators are many-qubit systems whose dynamics resembles that of a quantum system we cannot track by analytical or classical numerical methods. Hybrid simulators, such as variational quantum eigensolvers, combine quantum co-processors with classical computing. In all approaches, concepts from quantum information, such as entanglement measures and the protection or scrambling of quantum information, are key.
You will be part of the ‘core’ of the QuSoft center and we expect that you take on an active role in shaping and developing the center. Within UvA you are embedded in the Condensed Matter Theory group at ITFA/IoP (PI’s Caux, Corboz, Gritsev, Ozols, Schoutens, Walter, Van Wezel), with close relations to experimental quantum matter groups (Golden, Van Heumen, Schreck, Spreeuw). You are expected to actively engage in teaching within the UvA – initially in specialized courses in your own subject area, but also in the wider context of the educational programs in Physics and related subjects taught within UvA’s Science faculty. While employed by the UvA, you are expected to spend the majority of your time at QuSoft, which is presently housed on the same campus at the CWI.
A start-up package of a 2-year postdoc position and a PhD position will be provided.This position is established as part of the Quantum Software Consortium (QSC) programme: a 10-year grant funded by the Dutch Ministry of Education, Culture and Science through the Netherlands Organisation for Scientific Research. QSC is hosted by three research clusters: Leiden University, QuSoft (collaboration of the University of Amsterdam, the Dutch national research institute for mathematics and computer science CWI, and Free University Amsterdam) and the Delft institute QuTech (a collaboration between Delft University of Technology and TNO, the Netherlands Organisation for Applied Scientific Research).
You have a research interest and strong track record in the field of theoretical physics, connecting to the broad area of quantum many-body theory and quantum simulation. You have a PhD degree in Physics, Mathematics or Computer Science and must have a demonstrable commitment to teaching at the undergraduate and graduate levels. You are open to fostering collaborations not only within Amsterdam's academic institutes, but also nationally and internationally. Most importantly, you have the ability and capacity to develop independent and vigorous programs of externally funded research. You are willing to acquire a basic qualification in teaching (BKO) as demanded by Dutch universities.

Start dates are negotiable. The position will be filled at the level of Assistant professor, or in exceptional cases of Associate professor, depending on qualifications. The starting salary will be in accordance with university regulations for academic personnel, and depending on experience and qualifications. It will range from a minimum of €3,545 gross per month up to a maximum of €5,513 gross per month (Assistant professor, salary scale 11-12), based on full-time employment. This is excluding 8% holiday allowance and 8,3% end-of-year bonus. Tenure-track appointments will initially be on a temporary basis for a period of six years, with up to three assessment interviews during this period. In the case of a tenure track appointment, the position will become permanent after at most five years with promotion to a higher position if the candidate is successful. Criteria that have to be met include success in research, in acquisition of funds and in education. Details of the criteria will be mutually agreed upon before the appointment.
The Collective Labour Agreement of Dutch Universities is applicable. A favourable tax agreement, the 30% ruling, may apply to non-Dutch applicants.
