We seek a multidisciplinary researcher that is capable of developing advanced multiscale models for blood flows, and together with collaborators in experimental laboratories and medical centers, apply these models to probe deeper into our understanding of thrombosis and hemostasis. investigate a new, multiscale problem which falls within the spectrum of our research interest on disease related to blood flows and effects of medical devices or treatments. The research will build on the Multiscale Modelling and Simulation Framework to realize an efficient, high performance model that furthers our understanding by connecting two or more of the previously investigated scale levels (sub-cell level protein dynamics, cell level blood flow in capillaries, macroscopic level blood flow in large vessels). The specifics of the research question and the details of the model are open for discussion, where numerous scenarios are possible within our group. We will coordinate the details of the final plan to be in accordance with the interest and motivation of the candidate and with the research agenda of our group.
Therefore, we seek a candidate who has a clear vision and a strong drive on where her/his research could reach, and who is eager to collaborate with other scientists to get there.
High Performance Multiscale Computing
As part of previous projects we developed the Multiscale Modelling and Simulation Framework, which entails a theoretical approach toward multiscale modelling, a simulation framework to develop and run multiscale simulations and a set of tools and middleware to execute and manage multiscale computations on a broad array of computing infrastructure, from the desktop, via clusters and the cloud, to HPC environments. This framework will provide the grounds to implement novel computational solutions that will incorporate multiple numerical models designed to operate on specific scale levels.
Multiscale Blood Flow Modelling
Multiscale problems are frequent in the field of computational biomedicine. Our group focuses on blood flow related human diseases and treatment methods. The investigations span from basic research topics on cellular transport mechanism to more applied topics on endovascular medical devices. For an example, see our open-source cellular flow modelling toolkit at www.hemocell.eu. This model is used to probe deeper into the rheological properties of blood (shear thinning at high densities), as well as details of transport of platelets in non-trivial geometries (such as intracranial aneurisms).
The candidate should have a Master’s degree in either Computational Science, High Performance Computing, Computer Science, Computational (bio)Physics, Computational Biomedicine, or related disciplines. The knowledge of C++ and Python programming languages is necessary, since most of our models are built with these. Knowledge or experience on any of the followings is considered an advantage:
The applicant should be able to collaborate with researchers from other disciplines (e.g. medicals, experimental biologist, physicists), thus forming a bridge between their own domain and collaborators within a larger European project. Furthermore, the applicant should be able to work in an international multidisciplinary local team.
A temporary contract for 38 hours per week, preferably starting at date for the duration of 48 months. Initial employment is 18 months and after a positive evaluation, the appointment will be extended further with 30 months and should lead to a dissertation (PhD thesis). An educational plan that includes attendance of courses and national and international meetings will be drafted. The PhD candidate is also expected to assist in teaching of undergraduates.
The salary, depending on relevant experience before the beginning of the employment contract, will be €2,325 to €2,972 (scale P) gross per month, based on full-time (38 hours a week), exclusive 8 % holiday allowance and 8.3 % end-of-year bonus. A favorable tax agreement, the ‘30% ruling’, may apply to non-Dutch applicants. The Collective Labour Agreement of Dutch Universities is applicable.

The Computational Science Lab of the Informatics Institute aims to make dynamic complex systems tractable via computational science. We study a broad range of dynamics systems in fields ranging from biomedicine to urban, or socioeconomic systems. We also develop theory of dynamic complex systems based on concepts of information processing.
English is the working language within the Informatics Institute. Moreover, since Amsterdam is a very international city where almost everybody speaks and understands English, candidates need not be afraid of the language barrier.
