The Faculty of Humanities provides education and conducts research with a strong international profile in a large number of disciplines. Located in the heart of Amsterdam, the Faculty maintains close ties with many cultural institutes in the capital city. Employees focus on interdisciplinary collaboration, are verifiably broadly deployable and are prepared to be deployed in several teaching programmes.
The Faculty of Humanities comprises eight departments, and each department is composed of sections comprising one or more professors and a number of other academics working in the relevant field. The Philosophy Department comprises four sections: The Philosophical Tradition in Context; Logic and Language: Mind, Body, and Behavior; Philosophy and Public Affairs; and Critical Cultural Theory: Art, Culture and Media.
To strengthen its senior staff, the Philosophy Department, specifically the section Philosophy and Public Affairs, invites applications for an Associate professor in Social and Political Philosophy.
The ideal candidate for this position will have a strong record of publications (books, as well as articles in prestigious international journals), experience with acquiring third party funding, a broad philosophical background, outlook and interests, and solid experience with teaching at both BA and MA level, as well as experience in supervising PhD students.
The section's research and teaching focuses on practical philosophy and its history. More specifically, the candidate is expected to have firm knowledge of the history of political and social philosophy; to have firm knowledge of the most relevant contemporary normative political and social philosophical approaches (analytic as well as continental); to have shown to be interested in interdisciplinary research; to be able to apply his/her philosophical knowledge to problems in contemporary societies and to be interested not only in academic but also in broader non-academic publications.
We welcome applications from candidates with research expertise in, and a broad command of, issues in social as well as political philosophy. We also require a systematic specialization in either social or political philosophy (preferably, but not necessarily, within one of the ASCA focus areas Globalisation & Migration, Identities, Cultural and Social Critique, or the new UvA ‘Research Priority Area’ Human(e) AI).
The candidate is expected to take an active role in departmental activities, ranging from research seminars to board memberships and grant applications. Good social skills, a deeply collegial attitude, and ability and willingness to take up substantial administrative tasks are particularly welcome.
The research undertaken by the new associate professor will be part of the Amsterdam School for Cultural Analysis (ASCA), sub-programme Philosophy and Public Affairs.
