The University of Amsterdam is ranked 53rd in the 2023-2024 QS World University Rankings published on Tuesday, 27 June. That is 5 places higher than last year when the UvA was ranked 58th. This is the 20th time that the QS World University Rankings has been published.

In total, QS evaluated 2,963 institutions from more than 100 countries and ranked 1,499. The ranking includes 13 Dutch universities. The UvA belongs to the top 4% of the highest ranked institutions.

The ranking is compiled based on 9 indicators: academic reputation (30%), citations per faculty (20%), employer reputation (15%), employment outcomes (5%), student to faculty ratio (10%), international faculty (5%), international research network (5%), international students (5%), and sustainability (5%). The UvA’s highest scores came in ‘Citations per faculty’, closely followed by ‘International research network’.

The Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) leads the international ranking for the 12th year in a row. Places 2 and 3 are held by the University of Cambridge and the University of Oxford, respectively. The Netherlands is well-represented in the rankings, with a total of 8 Dutch universities in the top 200. Only TU Delft ranked higher than the UvA, placing at number 47.

QS published its 2022 World Rankings by Subject this past March. In this ranking, the UvA was in the top 100 globally for 29 subject areas, and number 1 and 2 two in the world for Communication & Media Studies and Dentistry, respectively.
