Dr W.P. de Voogt (1952) has been named Professor by Special Appointment of Chemistry of (Emerging) Water Contaminants in the Faculty of Science of the University of Amsterdam (UvA). The chair was established in connection with the Bèta Plus Foundation (Stichting Bèta Plus).

Pim de Voogt's research focuses on processes that affect substances in water, soil and air. He also studies the role these substances play in interactions between living and dead matter. De Voogt works on developing methods to identify new substances in the environment in order to trace their movements through, for example, the oceans or the atmosphere, and to establish how they reach remote regions. In addition, De Voogt examines the relationship between the molecular and physical-chemical properties of substances and the extent to which these substances are eliminated in the purification processes used in drinking water and wastewater treatment. New substances that are currently the focus of much attention in water research include pharmaceuticals, personal care and beauty products and illicit drugs.

De Voogt has been affiliated with the UvA since 1992, first as a University Lecturer and since 2007 as a Senior University Lecturer at the Institute for Biodiversity and Ecosystem Dynamics (IBED). Moreover, since 2006 he has worked as a researcher in the Chemical and Microbiological Water Quality and Health section at the KWR Watercycle Research Institute, formerly Kiwa Water Research, in Nieuwegein, the Netherlands. De Voogt is a member of the Technical Committee on Soil Protection (Technische Commissie Bodembescherming, TCB) and of various working groups of the Health Council of the Netherlands and the European Union. He is also a member of the editorial board of Reviews of Environmental Contamination and Toxicology. De Voogt coordinates several EU research projects, including the recently launched PERFOOD project.
