Dr R. Wesseling (1969) has been named Professor of Competition Law and Regulation in the Faculty of Law (FdR) at the University of Amsterdam (UvA).

Rein Wesseling's research interests include investigating the role that competition and economic regulation play in the European Union. He will be joining the Competition Law and Regulation research group at the interdisciplinary Amsterdam Centre for European Law and Governance, where research focuses on applied and normative study of law and governance in Europe. Key areas in this research group's work are the position of the consumer and the significance of consumer prosperity. Wesseling's appointment will expand the group's research into exploration of the role of competition and economic regulation in the process of European integration and ‘globalisation'.

Wesseling has been active as a lawyer since 1998. In 2004 he was named partner in the Stibbe law firm, where he specialises in competition law and economic regulation. Prior to this he worked as a researcher at the European University Institute in Florence from 1993 until 1997.

Wesseling is the author of many publications, which have appeared in professional journals such as Markt & Mededinging, European Law Review and European Competition Law Review. He is a member of the editorial team of Markt & Mededinging and an associate at the Nederlands Juristenblad. In 2008 Wesseling was named in the '10 more to watch' category of Global Competition Review magazine's '40 under Forty' list of the most prominent young lawyers working in the field of competition law worldwide, which is published every five years.
