Prof. G.A. van der Weijden has been named professor by special appointment of Periodontology, and in particular the prevention of periodontal infections, at the University of Amsterdam's (UvA) Faculty of Dentistry (ACTA) .

Prof. G.A. van der Weijden (1960) has been named professor by special appointment of Periodontology, and in particular the prevention of periodontal infections, at the University of Amsterdam's (UvA) Faculty of Dentistry (ACTA) .The chair was designated on behalf of Stichting Nederlandse Vereniging voor Paradontologie (Dutch Periodontology Association Foundation).

Fridus van der Weijden has built up a large body of research in oral hygiene and periodontal therapy. In his work at ACTA, he heads the industry research group involved in, amongst other things, contract research in clinical periodontology, where he concentrates mainly on the aspects of prevention and therapy. Van der Weijden also lectures in postgraduate courses. He is the author of the book De Stille Kracht van Ultrasoon (ACTA, 2005), and co-editor of the book Preventieve tandheelkunde: Op weg naar een doelmatige aanpak (Bohn Stafleu van Loghum, 2000).

Van der Weijden has worked at ACTA since 1989, first as a researcher and, from 2000 on, as a senior university lecturer. He is also director of a periodontal clinic in Utrecht (Paropraktijk Utrecht). Van der Weijden has many publications to his name, including in the specialist journals Journal of Periodontology, Journal of Dentistry and Nederlands Tijdschrift voor Tandheelkunde. He has been a member of the Ivoren Kruis (the Dutch association for oral health) advisory board on the prevention of oral and dental diseases since 1993. In 2009, Van der Weijden received the Carl Witthaus medal for his work at the Ivoren Kruis.
