Objects as Evidence
Every two years
A unique two-week summer course led by a team of researchers, curators, conservators and scientists from the Rijksmuseum Conservation Department, the Bard Graduate Center in New York and the Conservation Department of the University of Amsterdam.
Museum Objects as Evidence: Approaches to the Material World
9–20 July 2018, Amsterdam
The purpose of this Summer School is to introduce you to the notion of objects of cultural heritage as sources of information. Over the course of two weeks, you will be led through a series of object-driven examinations of pieces from the Rijksmuseum and other collections by a team of researchers, curators, conservators and scientists from the Rijksmuseum, the Conservation Department of the University of Amsterdam and the Bard Graduate Center (New York City). This method of gathering information from the objects allows us to ask more profound questions about the circumstances of their production and use, and in turn about the persons who made and used these objects.
A team of researchers, curators, conservators and scientists from the Rijksmuseum, the University of Amsterdam and the Bard Graduate Center in New York will lead the students through a series of object-driven examinations of objects from the collections of the Rijksmuseum, in workshops and excursions. Students from all over the world are selected to join the course with varying backgrounds, ranging from history and art history to archaeology. The students are led through a series of object-driven examinations of pieces primarily from the collections of the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam.
