Old remains with new techniques
Archaeology explores ancient cultures by studying material remains found in landscapes or collections and museums. The UvA's research focuses on North Western Europe and the Mediterranean region, starting from the period when written sources became existent. The approach is multidisciplinary, with different disciplines such as (art) history, sociology and earth sciences being integrated. Traditional research methods are used and new methods developed with the help of contemporary (digital) techniques.
As of September 2012, the UvA and the VU will offer joint Master's programmes via the newly created Amsterdam Centre for Ancient Studies and Archaeology (ACASA).
