Sign Linguistics

A unique perspective

Sign linguistics is the study of languages in the visual modality. This is a separate programme within Linguistics and is unique in the Netherlands. Sign languages are studied from a linguistic perspective whilst Sign Language of the Netherlands is taught to quite a high level. In addition to specific modules in sign linguistics, modules on general linguistics are also offered. Particular attention is paid to understanding how sign languages differ from spoken languages. In the QS World University Rankings by Subject 2012, the Linguistics programme of the University of Amsterdam was ranked 25th, making it the most lauded in continental Europe and one of the world's best.
