Ella Hendriks is Professor of Conservation and Restoration at the Faculty of Humanities (Department of Arts & Culture). She is engaged in the theory and practice of conservation and restoration of moveable cultural heritage. The UvA programme in Conservation and Restoration of Cultural Heritage is the only one of its kind in the Netherlands, offering training in nine tracks of object specialization, as well as a track in Technical Art History. Hendriks teaches in the one-year Minor and two-year Master’s programmes, and in the two-year post-Master’s programme leading to a professional qualification as conservator, as well as supervising PhD research.

Hendriks is member of the Scientific Working Group of the Netherlands Institute for Conservation, Art and Science (NICAS), a partner initiative between the Rijksmuseum, the Cultural Heritage Agency of the Netherlands (RCE), Delft University of Technology and the University of Amsterdam. She co-organizes the biweekly NICAS research colloquium. She is researcher and paintings group coordinator within the innovative REVIGO project (REassessing VIncent van GOgh), a four year project that runs within the Science4Arts Programme funded by the Netherlands Organization for Scientific Research (NWO), which involves collaboration between  the Van Gogh Museum, Tilburg University, Delft University of Technology, the Cultural Heritage Agency of the Netherlands and  AkzoNobel. The project aims to investigate the color changes in Van Gogh’s paintings and drawings that take place over time and to make digital colour reconstructions that reverse (or anticipate) the visual effects of ageing. She currently participates in the NICAS seed money project ‘Scientific Reasoning in Art: Evaluating evidence in paintings research using a Bayesian approach’ (SciRe), involving collaboration between the UvA, the Netherlands Forensic Institute (NFI), the Rijksmuseum and the Van Gogh Museum.

Previously Hendriks was Senior Paintings Conservator at the Van Gogh Museum (1999-2016) and Chief Paintings Conservator at the Frans Hals Museum (1987-1999), and from this background seeks to connect academic study with latest developments in the field of cultural heritage care. Both as an educator and a researcher Hendriks is constantly aware of the need to link theory and practice, as well as the vital importance of connecting humanities and sciences in determining an approach towards conservation decision-making. She has published numerous articles, co-produced exhibitions related to conservation, and lectured widely. Hendriks operates within an international network and endeavours to promote knowledge about the work of conservators among a broad public.
