Language and Education (Linguistics)

In the Master’s in Language and Education you will study language and literature learning from an acquisitional, pragmatic and educational perspective, while specialising in one of seven major European languages or language families.

Language and literature in an educational context

The Master's programme Language and Education offers a unique, interdisciplinary approach to the study of language and literature learning. Drawing from research and practice, you will take courses in both linguistics and literature. The linguistic strand of the programme focuses on language use, language variation and (foreign) language learning and teaching, while the literary strand zeroes in on the practical and conceptual ties between literature and education, addressing questions such as: How does one ‘teach’ literature? What is it that literature teaches us? And what is the relationship between literature and social development and change?

A first step on the teaching track

With strong ties to the Graduate School of Child Development and Education’s post-master, the programme is designed for students aiming to work in language teaching and learning, both nationally and internationally. You will explore a number of features of foreign language and literature pedagogy and study the L2 classroom as a social setting. You will come to understand how theories of learning and teaching play out in real-world educational settings and how content and pedagogy are intertwined and best combined to create safe and effective learning environments for all students.

Specialising in a language and literature of your choice

The Master’s in Language and Education responds to the educational needs of our contemporary multilingual society, where specialised knowledge of more than one culture and language is increasingly important. With experts in English, French, German, Italian, Scandinavian, Slavonic and Spanish, you will be able to take classes in both the linguistics and literature of your language of choice and apply theory and practice to your chosen language context.

Degree certificate

The Master's in Language and Education is an accredited degree programme of Linguistics. After successful completion of this programme, you will receive a legally accredited Master’s degree in Linguistics and the title Master of Arts (MA).
