Master Mediterranean Archaeology (Archaeology)

A rich research tradition

The Master's programme Mediterranean Archaeology is based on the long, yet very innovative, disciplinary traditions of the UvA and the VU University, which include attention for the study of the starting points of archaeology: objects but also creators and users, and the many ways they interconnect. A shared strength of the UvA and the VU is their long tradition of performing research in the Mediterranean area through several fieldwork projects in Italy and Greece. There also is a strong connection with the Allard Pierson Museum, expressed in joint exhibition and research projects also involving students.

ACASA: Archaeology in Amsterdam

As of September 2012, the Master’s programmes Archaeology, and Classics and Ancient Civilisations will be jointly provided by the University of Amsterdam and the VU University Amsterdam via the Amsterdam Centre for Ancient Studies and Archaeology (ACASA). The Master’s programme Mediterranean Archaeology forms part of this joint effort. By pooling their resources in ACASA, the two Amsterdam-based universities can offer the broadest package of Master’s programmes in the field of archaeology and classical antiquity in the Netherlands.

A lecturer speaks

Dr Gert Jan van Wijngaarden, Associate Professor of Mediterranean Archaeology at ACASA:

‘All the archaeological fieldwork within ACASA is conducted in close cooperation with local archaeological services. For example, our project on Zakynthos in Greece includes excavations, field surveys, remote sensing and interviews with local inhabitants. As with the other projects, it is a perfect training ground for students of different levels and interest.’
