About Mark Boukes

Dr. Mark Boukes is a postdoctoral researcher at the Amsterdam School of Communication Research part of the University of Amsterdam. After doing a PhD (2015) on the effects of infotainment, he currently works on a project together with Prof. Rens Vliegenthart that investigates the role of the media for the economic perceptions and political opinions people hold in times of economic crisis. This project involves a large scale content analysis of economic news and a three-wave panel survey.

For his PhD, which he defended in January 2015, Mark wrote the dissertation "Spicing up politics: how soft news and infotainment form political attitudes" (find it here) from September 2011 to August 2014. This research focused on new news genres and infotainment; in particular, soft news (e.g., human interest framing), opinionated news (e.g., PowNews) and political satire (e.g., LuckyTV), and how watching these kinds of television programs might have effects on political attitudes. For an overview of publications, please see here. Mark has been teaching course on Journalism and the Media as well as research methods and supervised MA theses on a wide variety of topics.
