Aryan van der Leij (1946) begon in 1971 als
schoolpsycholoog. In 1977 werd hij wetenschappelijk medewerker
aan de Vrij Universiteit te Amsterdam waar hij in 1983
promoveerde op een proefschrift getiteld Ernstige
leesproblemen. In 1984 werd hij benoemd tot hoogleraar in de
orthopedagogiek, in het bijzonder onderwijsleerproblemen. Sinds
1999 bekleedt hij deze positie aan de Universiteit van
Amsterdam. In 2001 werd hij voorzitter van de afdeling
Pedagogiek en Onderwijskunde.
In zijn onderzoek en het onderzoeksprogramma dat hij leidt
wordt aandacht besteed aan de kenmerken, de achtergronden en de
mogelijkheden tot beïnvloeding van leerstoornissen en
sociaal-emotionele problemen op school. Hij is vice voorzitter
van de stuurgroep van het langlopende, interdisciplinaire
Kennis Verrijkt programma van NWO (1998-2010) 'Identifying the
core features of developmental dyslexia: a multidisciplinary
approach' (UvA; RU Groningen;RU Nijmegen), waarin onderzoek
wordtverricht naar neurofysiologische, genetische,
ontwikkelingspsychologische en pedagogische aspecten van
dyslexie in de periode van 0 tot 10 jaar. Hij heeft studies
gepubliceerd over leesproblemen en leesstoornissen, etniciteit,
het handelen van leerkrachten (speciaal onderwijs) en de
effectiviteit van een variëteit aan interventies. Hij is lid
geweest van de Adviesraad voor het Basisonderwijs, het Speciaal
onderwijs en de Opleidingen (ARBO) (1981-1989), van de
Commissie voor Evaluatie van het Basisonderwijs (CEB)
(1991-1994), van de Stuurgroep Evaluatie Weer Samen naar School
(WSNS) (1995-1997) en voorzitter van de Commissie voor Voor- en
Vroegschoolse Educatie (VVE) en van de Evaluatie
Begeleidingscommissie (EBC) t.b.v. VVE-projectcoördinatie en
(1995-1999).
Aryan van der Leij (1946) started his career as a school psychologist. In 1977 he joined the Free University of Amsterdam en finished his PhD on severe reading disabilities in 1983. In 1984 he became Professor of Special Education. Since 1999 he holds this position at the University of Amsterdam. In 2001 he became head of the Department of Educational Sciences of the University of Amsterdam.
His research program is focussed on the characteristics, the origins and the ways to affect learning disabilities and social-emotional problems at school, including topics such as reading and dyslexia, arithmetic problems, basic cognitive processes involved in learning disabilities, comorbidity of learning disabilities, the relation of learning disabilities with brain functioning, and social-emotional problems such as internalising and externalising behaviour at school. He is vice-chairman of the Steering Group of the Dutch Dyslexia Program (1998-2010): Kennis Verrijkt programma of NWO (National Research Council) 'Identifying the core features of developmental dyslexia: a multidisciplinary approach'. This program is a joint project of the Radboud University ofNijmegen, theUniversity of Groningen and the University of Amsterdam thatincludes a longitudinal study (children at risk of developing dyslexia in the period from 0-10 years), four prevention studies (5 year olds) and a genetic study.
He has published studies on reading disabilities, learning disabilities, ethniticity, teacher activities with regard to special educational needs (special education) and the effectivity of a variety of interventions.
He has been member of Advisory Council for Primary Education ( 1981-1989), of the Evaluation Committee of Primary Education (1991-1994), of the Steering Group of Inclusive Education (1995-1997), and chairman of two Committees of Preschool and Early School Education (1995-1999).
