In 2010–2011 he was Visiting Associate Professor of Musicology at Boston University and visiting scholar at Harvard University. He authored The Reinvention of Religious Music: Olivier Messiaen’s Breakthrough toward the Beyond (with Fordham University Press, New York, 2009) and edited several volumes including Thresholds of Listening: Sound, Technics, Space (Fordham UP, 2015) and Contemporary Music and Spirituality (Routledge, 2016, with Robert Sholl). He is also a cultural adviser, currently working for the Dutch Council for Culture and the Konrad Boehmer Foundation for musical innovation.

    364 pp.

Robert Sholl and Sander van Maas (eds.), Contemporary Music and Spirituality (Farnham: Ashgate, 2016).

This volume provides a detailed exploration of the recent and current state of contemporary spiritual music in its religious, musical, cultural and conceptual-philosophical aspects. The contributors provide a new critical lens through which it is possible to see the music and thought of Cage, Ligeti, Messiaen, Stockhausen as spiritual music. The book surrounds these composers with studies of and by other composers directly associated with the idea of spiritual music (Harvey, Gubaidulina, MacMillan, Pärt, Pott, and Tavener), and others (Adams, Birtwistle, Ton de Leeuw, Ferneyhough, Ustvolskaya, and Vivier) who have created original engagements with the idea of spirituality.

    Codarts, 2016 (389 pp.)

Speelruimte: Voor klassieke muziek in de 21st eeuw is the final result of a research project on the future of classical music at Codarts University for the Arts in Rotterdam. With Micha Hamel, Dirk van Weelden and Arlon Luijten.

Forthcoming with Fordham UP (New York, 2015). 320 pages

Thresholds of Listening intervenes into an extraordinarily wide range of subjects, from masochism and torture at one extreme to Cage and Kafka at the other. Chapters zoom by at high speed, covering enormous ground and wrestling on all fronts with music’s potential value as a transformative biopolitical praxis. The level of scholarship is excellent and van Maas’s cast of contributors includes stellar names alongside emerging scholars. This is less a book about listening to music than a virtuosic inquiry into the relationships between listening, hearing, sound, space and an investigation of the limits of the human body.”—Anthony Gritten, Royal Academy of Music

Audience empowerment project report (March, 2015). 82 pages

Final report of an embedded research project on listening devices for use by concert goers during concert performances. Conducted in 2014-2015 with the Royal Concertgebouw in Amsterdam. Presented: March 2015 (82 pp.).

Wat is een Luisteraar? Reflectie, interpellatie en dorsaliteit in hedendaagse muziek (Inaugurele rede, Universiteit Utrecht, 2009).

Inaugurele rede als profileringshoogleraar in hedendaagse Nederlandse gecomponeerde muziek (vanwege Buma/Stemra), Universiteit Utrecht, november 2009.

Fordham University Press (New York, 2009). 242 pages

"If the idea that religious music is a thing of the past helps you sleep better, Sander van Maas' provocative book [The Reinvention of Religious Music] should wake you up. Did you ever think that an ear could be circumcised? From the Bible to Messiaen and Derrida, he radically rethinks the relationships between ear and flesh."—Peter Szendy, Université de Paris X Nanterre

A philosophical account of music-religion relationships in Messiaen (2003). 364 pages
