After successful completion of this minor, you will have knowledge of the basic principles of the Modern Greek language and the political, socioeconomic and cultural developments in the Byzantine Empire (± 1000-1453), the Venetian Empire (± 1000-1797) and the Greek world (present-day Greece and Cyprus).

Doing a language minor takes a considerable amount of effort. Besides attending the intensive lectures, you will also spend ample time on self-study and on the preparation of tests related to vocabulary, listening skills and grammar, even if you have prior knowledge of the language.

This minor is offered by the Faculty of Humanities. The faculty’s minors consist of 30 ECTS credits and earn you a second qualification that will be listed on the transcript accompanying your degree certificate.

Continue your studies with a Master’s programme

For university Bachelor’s students, the minor Modern Greek can be a good preparation for the Master’s in European Studies: Identity and Integration. Always check the admission requirements on the Application & admission page of the Master’s programme that you are interested in.

Entry requirements

This minor is open to students with a university first-year diploma or a positive binding study advice from a university Bachelor’s.

The minor is also open to students from a university of applied sciences (hbo) who have obtained their first-year diploma. In the case of students from a university of applied sciences, however, a minor is not sufficient to gain access to a Master’s programme. If you are a student from a university of applied sciences and you want to prepare for a Master’s at the UvA, please see our pre-Master's programmes

Application

The registration period for a minor in the academic year 2024-2025 will start on Tuesday 14 May at 8:00 and end on Monday 17 June at 13:00.
