The Hollandsche Schouwburg in Amsterdam, where famous names in the history of Dutch theatre once celebrated triumphs, is one of the most emotionally charged, contested and meaningful sites in the Netherlands.
During the Nazi occupation of the Netherlands, tens of thousands of Jews were assembled here before being deported to concentration and extermination camps. After the war, it became a memorial to the Jewish victims of Nazi persecution. This book is the first international publication to address all of the historical aspects of the site, putting it in a broader European and historical context.
