Students can lodge objections against decisions made by the Executive Board. The Executive Board submits all such objections to the independent Arbitration Committee for Student Objections for its opinion.
Notice of objection
If you do not agree with a decision taken by the Executive Board, you have six weeks in which to appeal it. An objection may concern issues such as the following:
- enrolment as a student or external candidate;
- enrolment based on a foreign diploma;
- decision on a university entrance examination
- termination of registration as a student;
- tuition fee payment, exemption, reduction or repayment;
- award and rejection of requests for Profiling Fund grants;
- award and rejection of requests for Administrative Body Membership Grants;
- admissions rejection based on gaps in prior education.
Objections relating to any of the above must be submitted to the Arbitration Committee for Student Objections and must include at least the following: your name and address, the date, the grounds for your objection and a description or copy of the decision against which your objection is directed. Objections must be submitted within no more than six weeks after the day on which the decision was issued. If it is not possible to provide all the requisite information on time (within six weeks), you may submit an incomplete objection within the stated time limit and will receive an extension to provide the remaining documentation.
You will receive a confirmation of receipt of the notice of objection. You may also be asked to provide additional information. The person(s) who took the decision at issue will be asked to determine if an amicable settlement may be possible. If not, the Committee prepares a response to the objection, of which you will receive a copy. Based on that response, you will have to decide whether you wish to withdraw or pursue the objection.
In the event that you wish to pursue the objection, a hearing will be scheduled at the earliest possible opportunity. The person(s) who took the decision will also be invited to attend. Both parties can opt to engage legal counsel to represent or advise them. You must engage such legal counsel yourself.
At the hearing you will have the chance to present your case to the Arbitration Committee for Student Objections, consisting of an external chairperson and two members.
Decision on an objection
Pursuant to the hearing and consultation with the Arbitration Committee for Student Objections, the Executive Board will determine whether to uphold the initial decision or take a new decision. You will receive a written notification of its decision regarding the objection.
There are no costs involved in the objection procedure.
