Suppose you draw a closed curve without lifting your pen from the page, creating regions in the plane. How many colours do you need to colour these regions so that any regions sharing a boundary have different colours? Using graph theory, we explore this question. Graph theory studies how points and lines are connected, helping us understand networks, paths and patterns. In this mini lecture, we turn the colouring question into a mathematical problem and look for the answer.
