In the one-year Master's programme English Literature and Culture, you explore the history and theory of literature in English, and study its relationship with other media, while engaging key issues of intellectual concern in society, politics and culture.

English Literature from a broad perspective

The Master's programme English Literature and Culture caters to students whose interests and academic backgrounds are in literary studies and European culture in the broad sense, and English Literature and Culture and World Literature in English in particular. The programme also offers you the opportunity to explore the interrelations of literature with other kinds of cultural objects, such as films, digital media and the visual arts.

Student profile

As a student in the Master’s programme in English Literature and Culture you will be expected to have the following knowledge, insight and skills:

  • You have a Bachelor’s degree from an accredited university and have taken academic courses equivalent to at least one full-time semester of academic studies (30 EC or the equivalent) in a humanities subject or similar field that requires students to produce written interpretations of texts;
  • You are able to conduct research independently, engage with critical debates in the secondary literature, and have completed a thesis or comparable interpretatitve essay or research project;
  • You are familiar with a broad range of literary works written in English;
  • You are interested in deepening your understanding of both literature written in English and the critical approaches one might take towards it.

English Literature and Culture in part-time mode

This programme is also offered in part-time study mode, in which case it takes 2 years. You can obtain a maximum of 30 ECTS per year (12-18 ECTS per semester). As a part-time student you will follow the programme together with full-time students. You will prepare your study plan for the part-time programme in consultation with the Master’s programme coordinator (See: Contact).

Degree certificate 

English Literature and Culture is an accredited degree programme of Literary Studies. After successful completion of this programme, you will receive a legally accredited Master’s degree in Literary Studies and the title Master of Arts (MA).
