To support academics in choosing collaboration partners, the UvA set up an advisory committee in 2021, for example to prevent research data from being used by parties that violate human rights or have terrorist or military motives.

Who sits on the advisory committee?

The committee consists of experienced academics and policy officers from all UvA faculties and meets regularly to discuss cases submitted by researchers, research directors or other UvA bodies.

What does the advisory committee do?

The committee advises the Executive Board and faculty deans on new research collaborations and focuses primarily on helping researchers with ethical issues. The committee also provides a step-by-step plan to help researchers assess their concerns about potential unethical use by third parties.

The committee may seek the advice of additional experts in some cases. These experts cannot be held responsible for the final advice or advisory report. The responsibility always lies with the permanent members of the committee.
