    About Mark Boukes

Dr. Mark Boukes is an assistant professor of Communication Science at the University of Amsterdam. After doing a PhD (2011-2014) on the effects of infotainment, he has worked as a post-doctoral researcher (2014-2017) on a project investigating the role of the media during the financial crisis; specifically, studying the media content and the effects it had for the economic perceptions and political opinions people hold in times of economic crisis. This project involved a large scale content analysis of economic news and a three-wave panel survey. From 2019, Mark works on a NWO-funded Veni project revolving around the role of political satire for youth political engagement. His research has been published in leading journals of the field (e.g., Journal of Communication, Communication Research, Journalism, Political Communication) and been awarded with several international awards of the International Communication Association (2014, '15, '16, and '18).

For his PhD, which he defended in January 2015, Mark wrote the dissertation "Spicing up politics: how soft news and infotainment form political attitudes" (find it here) from September 2011 to August 2014. This research focused on new news genres and infotainment; in particular, soft news (e.g., human interest framing), opinionated news (e.g., PowNews) and political satire (e.g., LuckyTV), and how watching these kinds of television programs might have effects on political attitudes. For an overview of publications, please see here. Mark has been teaching course on Journalism and the Media as well as research methods and supervised MA theses on a wide variety of topics.
