You will engage with different media (e.g. art, literature, policy documents, orally transmitted traditions, video blogs etc), and delve into current practices of identity and meaning making on the continent. In taking a broad view of what constitutes culture and heritage, the course includes legacies and ongoing discourses of imperialism and colonialism, various regional differences, and a diverse range of identities. It will cover, for example, the practice of learning languages as an aspect of ‘European’ identity, the manipulation of narratives about Europe in literature and storytelling, and experiences of post-socialist nostalgia.
