Lawyer and lecturer Michael Schouten tells you all about the Master’s Law & Finance in this video.
The study programme
The Amsterdam Law School and the Amsterdam Business School join forces to offer a challenging curriculum. It's unique worldwide because it is offered by two faculties. Therefore, it provides truly interdisciplinary education at the intersection between law, economics and finance. The main goal is to educate students in both fields of law and finance. It has the ambition to set a new and higher standard for what may be expected of financial lawyers, and therefore makes no concessions in its economics curriculum. The relevant subjects will be studied from a combined financial-legal perspective. You will therefore be taught to think and practice in an in-depth interdisciplinary manner. Be prepared for an intensive full-time programme, which includes active in-class participation and written assignments on both law and finance topics.
At least one course in your curriculum is part of the Amsterdam Law Practice, our unique, award winning experiential education programme. A contemporary way of learning, in which you learn by doing and develop your professional identity by reflecting on who you are as a legal professional. The Amsterdam Law Practice received a Higher Education Award in 2022.
The interdisciplinarity of this Master’s programme makes it a challenging but also very rewarding experience. The programme teaches you skills that are useful for many different careers. I especially liked its critical approach, which I hope to continue to apply in the futureSimone Spijkerman (Netherlands), Master’s student Law & Finance Read more stories from students

‘During my Bachelor's I became more interested in the world of finance and by coincidence I stumbled upon Law & Finance, a new Master's with the interdisciplinary character I was looking for. The curriculum is unique and covers topics at the intersection of Law and Finance, such as Insolvency Law and Corporate Finance and Finance: Capital Structure and Corporate Reorganization. Because of these courses, I knew I would be excited about Corporate Finance and its strategic issues.’
