The Central PhD Council (CPC) advocates for the interests of PhD candidates at the University of Amsterdam (UvA). We engage in dialogue with university leadership and contribute to policy and organisational decisions relating to PhD programmes.

Who are we?

The Council is made up of PhD candidates from the seven UvA faculties. We represent over 4,000 PhD candidates and are affiliated with the national PhD Candidates Network of the Netherlands (PNN). Get in touch with us.

What do we do?

  • Monthly meetings: We discuss current issues and share information across faculties. Non-members and staff are also welcome to attend or propose agenda items. Interested in joining? Send us an email.

  • Meetings with the Executive Board: Every three months, we meet with the Rector, a representative from Academic Affairs, and a delegate from the Deans’ Council.

  • Consultation with other UvA bodies: Depending on the topic, we also liaise with groups such as, the Central Works Council, the Social Safety Taskforce, confidential advisers, the ombuds officer, the PhD programme working group, the Recognition and Rewards Committee.

  • PhD Survey: Every two years, we conduct a survey among PhD candidates across all faculties. Topics include employment conditions, supervision, progress, wellbeing, and career development. The results are published in a public report. View the latest PhD Survey Report.
