Physics and Astronomy
Below a snapshot of some of our researchers with expertise in the fields of Physics and Astronomy.
Prof. Carsten Dominik
Carsten Dominik is professor of Astronomy. His research focuses on the formation and evolution of stars and planets, particularly the structure and evolution of the protoplanetary disks surrounding young stars.

Dr Jason Hessels
Jason Hessels is an astrophysicist and conducts research on neutron stars, the most compact stars in the Universe. Hessels is widely known for his work on pulsars (rotating neutron stars) and other fast radio bursts that can help us map the extremes of Nature.

Prof. Sera Markoff
Sera Markoff is professor of Theoretical High-Energy Astrophysics, focusing mainly on relativistic compact objects and astroparticle physics. Markoff specialises in the study of accretion – i.e., the gravitational capture of material – around compact objects such as black holes, and investigates how that energy is processed and released into a variety of forms, including extreme outflows and radiation.

Dr Selma de Mink
Selma de Mink is an astrophysicist. Her research focus is on the evolution of massive stars and how two stars interact in binary systems. She also focuses on the complex physical processes as well as the broad implication for chemical enrichment, feedback and the diversity of explosive transients that mark the death of massive stars.
