The job market

Graduates possess the skills and leadership qualities to pursue careers in fields where the capacity to understand and operate in new media is essential. For example, in academic research, journalism and communication, production in the creative industries and digital agencies, and (non-) governmental agencies.

  • Our alumni work in new media fields in research, cultural and governmental institutions, NGOs as well as the media industry;
  • Recent graduates work as academics, governmental media advisors, community managers, concept and content producers, researchers, editors, social media managers, journalists and app developers.

An academic career

The New Media and Digital Culture Master's programme also offers a pathway for an academic career in teaching and in the pursuit of a PhD in an emerging field of study. You can go on to a PhD programme at the UvA, another Dutch university or a university abroad. When pursuing an academic career, it is advisable to discuss the possibility of joining a two-year Research Master's programme.

If you are passionate about new media research and show exceptional promise in the first semester of your Media Studies Master’s programme, you may apply to switch to our Research Master’s programmes:
