Research on sign languages forms part of the two research programmes: The Language Blueprint  and Learnability. For both programmes the perspective of sign linguistics is an important one. The research focuses on the form of grammars and sign language acquisition.

Both research programmes are worked on in different research groups. The sign linguists all work in the group Sign Language Grammar and Typology. Some also participate in the group Grammar and Cognition.
