  • About

    Thijmen van Alphen is a PhD candidate of the Department of Child Development and Education at the University of Amsterdam. His research interest focus on the daily dynamics of teacher stress, emotion, resilience, future time perspective, and professional learning. In addition to investigating teachers, he extends these interests to students as well.

    While teaching biology in secondary education, he finished an additional masters degree in educational sciences in 2019. After which he started his PhD project under the supervision of dr. Joost Jansen in de Wal, dr. Jaap Schuitema, and prof. dr. Thea Peetsma. In the current stage of this project, interventions aimed at reducing the stress experiences of teachers are being developed and tested.

    Besides activities in research and teaching, he participates in the development of various digital educational tools to stimulate active and playful learning among students. These tools often employ the principles of ‘gamification’, and are used in high school setting.

    Research interests and statistical methods overview :
    Stress, Anxiety, Emotion, Motivation, Learning, Buoyancy, Resilience, Future Time Perspective, Multilevel modeling (ML), Dynamic Structural Equation Modeling (DSEM), and Item Response Theory (IRT).
