My current research is concerned with historical, theoretical, and philosophical questions of art’s ‘social form’, how, that is, society and social relations appear in the work of art. With the support of the Leverhulme Trust and within the context of the Kunstgeschiedenis department and the Amsterdam School for Cultural Analysis, I am pursuing a monograph on Theodor W. Adorno’s critical contributions to these concerns. My expertise and interests lie in critical theory, aesthetics, the philosophy of art, art historiography, debates in art theory, modern and contemporary art, and the myriad intersections and overlaps of these areas.
Prior to joining the University of Amsterdam, I studied aesthetics, art theory, philosophy, and visual cultures at the University of the Arts London, Goldsmiths, the Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin, and the Centre for Research in Modern European Philosophy (CRMEP), Kingston University London. At the CRMEP, I completed an AHRC-funded PhD on Adorno’s philosophy and social theory under the supervision of Prof. Peter Osborne, Prof. Howard Caygill, and, while a visiting researcher at the Institute for Social Research, Frankfurt, Prof. Juliane Rebentisch.
Among other things, I have published and lectured on the work of Adorno, Walter Benjamin, Alexander Kluge, Siegfried Kracauer, and Alfred Sohn-Rethel. Among other places, I have taught at Central Saint Martins, Columbia University, Goethe-Universität Frankfurt am Main, the Hochschule für Bildende Künste, Braunschweig, Rijksuniversiteit Groningen, and Universiteit Leiden. I also serve as a member of the Editorial Board of the Historical Materialism journal. For an extended list of articles, papers, edited texts, etc., please see my academia.edu page.
