  • “Microbial metagenomics” uitgelegd

    "microbial": De kunde van microben

    "meta":         in een gemeenschap

    "genomics": en de ontwikkeling van de digitale gereedschappen die noodzakelijk zijn om hun genomen te ontcijferen (en te zien wat ze doen).

    Waarom bestudeer je “Microbial metagenomics”?

    Ik denk dat onderzoek naar microbiële gemeenschappen en hun erkenning als interactieve partners mogelijkheden bieden voor:

    • een beter begrip van onze wereld
    • opheldering van problemen, bijvoorbeeld ziektes van mens, dieren en planten
    • voorspelling van terugkoppelingen die optreden door wijzigingen in het milieu of de levenswijze
    • vernieuwen van strategieën om de levenskwaliteit te behouden of te verhogen

    Wat achtergrond…

    Gedurende het grootste deel van de 20e eeuw zijn microben in isolatie gestudeerd. Belangrijke inzichten betreffend de basis van moleculaire mechanismen zijn gewonnen dankzij de makkelijke handhaving en genetische manipulatie van modelorganismen zoals E. coli of bakkers gist. Hoewel het voor de hand lag dat deze microben in het wild nooit alleen zullen leven, bleef de ware diversiteit van microbiële gemeenschappen verborgen tot op de moment wanneer high-throughput sequencing op ze werd toegepast (vanaf 2004): het bleek dat de meeste microben nooit waren gecultiveerd en hele takken van hun (en onze) stamboom onzichtbaar waren geweest. “Metagenomics” werd het schip van de ontdekkingsreiziger of de maan rover, maar dan voor microbiologen. Naast het catalogiseren van de microbiële wereld buiten en binnen ons lichaam kwamen er nieuwe vragen bij.

    Wat zijn de vragen van metagenomics?

    Wat doet deze wereld van microben met ons?

    Wordt ons welzijn door microbiële gemeenschappen beïnvloed?

    Wordt de gezondheid van andere organismen door hun microbiomen bepaald, bijvoorbeeld die van de planten waarvan we eten?

    Zijn deze effecten gedetermineerd (en dus regelbaar) door ecologische wetten?
