  • Profile

Pieter Lagerwaard is a PhD Candidate at the University of Amsterdam (UvA). Using participatory methods, he studies the use of financial transaction data for security purposes by Financial Intelligence Units (FIUs). The PhD is part of the research project 'FOLLOW: Following the Money from Transaction to Trial,' funded by the European Research Council (ERC) (see for more information: http://www.projectfollow.org/). His theoretical interests lie at the intersection of Science and Technology Studies (STS) and the nexus between finance and security.

Academic background: Lagerwaard has conducted ethnographic fieldwork in India both for his bachelor in anthropology and research master in social science (cum laude). The former research project was focusing on migration and was a collaborative effort with the ‘Provincial Globalization’ research team (see for more information http://www.provglo.org/). For the master research he conducted fieldwork among stockbrokers in the financial market of Mumbai. His work on financial anthropology was published in the Journal of Cultural Economy.
