Liza Mügge (née Liza Nell) is associate professor at the political science department, and research theme leader of the Diverse Europe group of the Amsterdam Research Centre for European Studies at the UvA. Current academic year (2019-2020) Liza acts as chair of the UvA Taskforce on Social Safety. She is founding co-editor of the European Journal of Politics and Gender and the previous director of the Amsterdam Research Center for Gender and Sexuality (2016-2019).
Her research focuses on political representation and equality of ethnic minorities and women in Europe. She received the highly competitive Veni grant (2013) from the NWO (Netherlands Organization for Scientific Research) and a NWO Vidi grant (2017). In addition, she was an affiliated researcher of the Open Research Area-funded project Pathways to Power: The Political Representation of Citizens of Immigrant Origin in Seven European Democracies (PATHWAYS). She is co-recipient of the Politics 2018 Best Article Award.
Liza was residential fellow with Netherlands Institute for Advanced Study in the Humanities and Social Sciences (2016-2017), the Women and Public Policy Program at the Harvard Kennedy School (2014-2015) and visiting scholar at the Minda de Gunzburg Center for European Studies at Harvard University (January-June 2012). She is past co-convenor of the Standing Group Gender & Politics of the European Consortium for Political Research (ECPR) (2013-2016). In July 2019 she and her team hosted the European Conference of Politics & Gender at the UvA.
Liza believes in public and academic service and serves on a range of committees and boards. Since 2017, she serves on the Vidi panel of the Netherlands Organisation for Scientific Research, division Social Sciences and Humanties. Currently, she is member of the jury of the Ribbius Peletier Penning (2018-2023) - a prize of the Provincial Council of North Holland for women who contribute to the political representation of women in the North of Holland. In 2019 she is member of jury of the Joke Smit Prijs - an biannual award of the Ministry of Education, Culture and Science for a person whose work and activities improve the position of women. Additionally, she is boardmember of the Stichting fonds Catharina van Tussenbroek (a foundation to support international mobility of early career female researchers) and member of the Associate Professor Sounding Board of the Dutch Network of Women Professors. She is editorial advisory board member of Migration Letters and Kurdish Studies.
