    Sumihiro las Western Art History als BA en MA student aan de Tokyo University of the Arts, gevolgd door zijn tweede MA in History of Art aan het Courtauld Institute of Art in Londen. In 2017 trad hij toe tot de Amsterdam School of Historical Studies (ASH) als een promovendus, gespecialiseerd in de kunst van de late Middeleeuwen, met bijzondere belangstelling voor de Vroeg-Nederlandse schilderkunst en de invloed ervan op Duitse schilders in de vijftiende eeuw.
