Mijn onderzoek richt zich in het algemeen op het behoud en beheer van biodiversiteit. We richten ons in het bijzonder op de rol van genetische processen in kleine, geïsoleerde populaties van bedreigde soorten. Hoewel genetische processen zeer belangrijk zijn voor de overleving van bedreigde soorten wordt kennis over genetica in het natuurbeheer nog steeds véél te weinig toegepast.
We proberen onder meer de volgende vragen te beantwoorden, waarbij onze onderzoeksobjecten variëren van planten als stengelloze sleutelbloem, kleine schorseneer, rozenkransje en zwartblauwe rapunzel tot dieren als loopkevers, wilde bijen, zweefvliegen, ringslangen en konijnen:
Om de resultaten van bovenstaand onderzoek in de praktijk toe te passen hebben we in 2012 vanuit IBED Stichting Science4Nature opgericht. Inmiddels werken we bij Science4Nature aan een groot aantal soortbeschermingsprojecten in diverse provincies, waarbij we gebruik maken van lab- en kasfaciliteiten van IBED. Projecten variëren van demografisch onderzoek aan de Kievitsbloem langs de IJssel en Liggend bergvlas in de duinen van Katwijk, populatiegenetisch onderzoek aan Korensla in heel Nederland tot door ex situ kweekprogramma's ondersteunde populatieversterking en herintroductie van soorten als Stengelloze sleutelbloem, Rozenkransje, Kleine schorseneer en Knollathyrus in Drenthe, Kleine schorseneer en Besanjelier in Gelderland en Zwartblauwe rapunzel in Noord-Brabant.

Behalve in deze twee cursussen geef ik ook onderwijs in het vak Inleiding Biologische Wetenschappen (1e jaars Biologie, veldwerk de Slufter, Texel), in het Mastervak "Spatial Processes in Ecology & Evolution", Mastertrack Ecology & Evolution), aan het Amsterdam University College (werkcollege Conservation Genetics in de cursus Conservation and Restoration Biology), aan studenten Future Planet Studies (college en werkgroep Habitatfragmentatie, college Flora & Vegetation of Tenerife (Mastervak "Vulnerability Assessment of Geo-Ecosystems").
