    Evelien van Roemburg holds a Bachelors degree in law (LLB) from the University of Amsterdam (2006) and a Masters degree in law (LLM) from both The University of Amsterdam (2008) and Columbia Law School, New York City (2009). She also holds a Masters degree in political science (M.Sc.) of the University of Amsterdam (2010). Evelien is a PhD candidate at the University of Amsterdam, Faculty of Law. Her thesis, under supervision of Professor Zieck, concerns the supervisory task of UNHCR, the refugee agency of the United Nations. She is also a lecturer at the Faculty of Law and the Faculty of Social and Behavioural Science at the University of Amsterdam.

    In 2008-2009 Evelien was a Fulbright fellow, a fellow of the Huygens Scholarship Program and a fellow of the Netherlands-America Foundation. At Columbia University, she graduated as a Harlan Fiske Stone Scholar (with honors) and was awarded with the Parker School Certificate of Excellence in Foreign and Comparative Law.

  • Research and work

    Evelien is a Ph.D. researcher as of January 2010. She is doing research in the area of international refugee law. She is also a lecturer, both at the Faculty of Law (in international refugee law at the master's level) and at the Faculty of Social and Behavioural Science (in political theory and in conflict studies at the bachelor's level and in refugee rights at the master's level).

    Evelien is being supervised by Professor M.Y.A. Zieck, who is specialized in International Refugee Law at the University of Amsterdam (Faculty of Law). Professor Zieck is also Director of the Amsterdam Graduate Law School and Amsterdam Law College, as well as the Dean of Admissions of the University of Amsterdam. In addition, she is Professor of International Public Law at the Pakistan College of Law, Lahore (Pakistan).

    Evelien's research focuses on the supervisory task of UNHCR with regard to the 1951 Convention relating to the Status of Refugees. She analyses this supervisory task and compares the manner in which UNHCR carries out the supervision of the 1951 Convention with other international monitoring bodies.
