  • Profile

I am a scholar in urban and cultural studies. I obtained my doctoral degree in Human Geography from Vrije Universiteit Brussel in 2019. Following my PhD, I undertook a three-month grant writing fellowship at the Centre for Urban Studies of the University of Amsterdam. Currently, I am a Marie Sklodowska-Curie Postdoctoral Research Fellow affiliated with the program group Cultural Sociology and with the Amsterdam Institute for Social Science Research (AISSR).

My scholarly work draws from the fields of human and cultural geography, urban sociology and cultural studies. By pursuing connections among these disciplines, I am interested in exploring transformations in urban spaces and cultures.

In my earlier research, I focused on the spatialization of cultural industries, particularly examining the institutional perspective on the relationship between cultural industries and urban transformation. More recently, my interest has shifted towards the new public spheres created by the cultural infrastructures. Investigating new forms of publicness, I explored how these cultural infrastructures can be understood as 'spaces of openness' embracing the diversity of urban population and enabling practices of common life.

In my most recent work, I have developed an interest in the growing migration trend of urban groups known as 'digital natives' from urban to non-urban areas. In my current role as a Marie Sklodowska-Curie Postdoctoral Research Fellow, I aim to explore how ex-urban groups connect urban, rural and digital spaces. Moreover, I will design and implement a novel cultural impact analysis in three European non-urban areas that will offer innovative insights and tools to understand this transformative trend.

I am deeply committed to producing outcomes that extend beyond academia, with the aim of fostering more inclusive cities. For the past 12 years, I have provided research and consultancy support to municipalities and civil society organizations in projects related to local cultural policies and cultural planning. Notable among these projects are the Istanbul Foundation for Culture and Arts' comprehensive report on Cultural Planning for Local Authorities (2016), the development of cultural policies for the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality Vision 2050 Strategic Document (2021), and the Citta Slow Metropolis Project of Izmir Metropolitan Municipality (2022). During 2021-2023, I prioritized disseminating academic knowledge to the younger generations and I worked as a lecturer at the Istanbul Bilgi University and the Izmir University of Economics.
