    Esther Schoorel is a PhD researcher at the Amsterdam School for Regional, Transnational and European Studies (ARTES). She obtained her BSc in Cultural Anthropology and Sociology of Developing Societies at the University of Amsterdam and her Ma in Middle Eastern Studies from Lund University (Sweden). She has previously held teaching positions at the American University in the Emirates (United Arab Emirates), the University of Groningen (NL) and Maastricht University (NL).

    Research Interests

    Esther's research centers around the study of activism, popular resistance and memory, particularly in (but not limited to) the Middle East. She has previously worked on a project about the memorialization of the Srebrenica genocide in Bosnia and Herzegovina. Currently she is working on her PhD project, which centers on online memory activism in Lebanon and the Lebanese diaspora.
