Eline Suzanne Smit, PhD studied Health Sciences at Maastricht University. In 2012, she obtained her PhD by defending her dissertation: ‘Motivating smokers to quit. Effectiveness and feasibility of a web-based multiple tailored smoking cessation programme and tailored counselling by practice nurses’. In this dissertation, she described how an innovative, web-based smoking cessation program can be integrated in the primary care setting by presenting the results from studies focusing on the adoption and implementation of the program by practice nurses, the type of smokers reached in the general practice setting, and an extensive (cost-)effectiveness evaluation.

After continuing to work at Maastricht University as a postdoctoral researcher, a function for which she received a personal grant from research institute CAPHRI, Dr. Smit started working as an Assistant Professor in Health Communication at the Amsterdam School of Communication Research/ASCoR, University of Amsterdam. Her main research interests concern digital health communication, including but not limited to online computer-tailored health communication. Specifically, her research focuses on the integration of innovative digital health communication strategies – such as eHealth and mHealth interventions – into the healthcare setting and the exploration of novel computer-tailoring strategies, such as mode and message frame tailoring.

Dr. Smit has an extensive track record of peer-reviewed articles and has successfully obtained multiple grants for research projects in the digital health communication field.
