Moniek is assistant professor of developmental psychopathology and ‘orthopedagoog’ (in training to be Child and Youth Psychologist NIP) at the Center for eating disorders of LEVVEL, a large treatment center for specialized and academic mental health care for youth in Amsterdam and surrounding. She is actively involved in teaching, specifically in the clinical courses of the MA ‘Orthopedagogiek’ as well as in post-master education for clinicians at LEVVEL.
Recognizing that a one-size-fits-all approach in clinical interventions may be ineffective for clients with an eating disorder, she aims to explore how research can contribute to the development of personalized, evidence-based youth care.
Another research interest lies in the crucial role of mentalizing—being able and inclined to form appropriate theories about one's own and others' minds—in understanding family dynamics and children's mental health. Since mentalizing appears to be a transdiagnostic factor across most psychological problems, Moniek studies how mentalizing can be best captured in youth with eating disorders and what is necessary to improve mentalizing in the family system.
After receiving a Bachelor’s degree in Criminology from the Free University of Amsterdam, Moniek pursued a clinical Master's degree in 'Orthopedagogiek' (MSc 2014, cum laude) and a Research Master's degree in Child Development and Education (MSc 2015, cum laude) at the University of Amsterdam. She completed her PhD thesis research (PhD 2019, cum laude) under the supervision of Susan Bögels, Geert-Jan Stams (University of Amsterdam), and Elizabeth Meins (University of York). Throughout her academic journey, she has consistently integrated her work in science with clinical practice at various mental health care centers.
