Academics who are active in public debate or on social media may encounter threats or intimidation. As this can be highly distressing and may affect your sense of safety, freedom and confidence in your work, the UvA takes this seriously and is ready to support you.

What we mean by threats and intimidation

Intimidation refers to behaviour that causes fear or distress, such as verbal abuse, offensive remarks or repeated harassment. When there is an explicit threat of physical or emotional harm, it is considered a threat. This behaviour can occur both online and offline. The Guide to Addressing Threats and Intimidation by Universities of the Netherlands offers further information, tips and strategies to help academics respond to such situations.

How the UvA supports academics

Threatening or intimidating messages – whether by email, phone or social media – can have a significant impact. The UvA strongly advises academics not to face these situations alone. Supervisors, the Press Office and the Integral Safety Department are available to support you and help determine appropriate steps.

UvA contact points for academics

  • Online intimidation: contact the UvA Press Office at persvoorlichting@uva.nl or +31 (0)20 525 2695 (also available outside office hours). If necessary, they will refer you to the Integral Safety Department.
  • Security concerns: for urgent matters, call the Integral Safety Department at +31 (0)20 525 5510. For non-urgent matters, email integraleveiligheid@uva.nl. They will discuss which measures may be necessary, such as shielding personal data and/or filing a police report.
  • Be sure to inform your supervisor about the situation as well.

Preparing for media appearances

It is advisable to prepare thoroughly before appearing in the media — for instance, when sharing your research findings or participating in an interview at a journalist’s invitation. The UvA Press Office can offer guidance. They can, for example, help you discuss how to address a sensitive topic or how to manage potential negative attention arising from media exposure. You can also register for the Basic introduction to dealing with news media.

What supervisors can do

Are you a supervisor wondering what you can do to help? See the tips below:

  • Inform staff members of the available options for preparing to appear in the media, especially when dealing with sensitive subjects.
  • Make sure your team is aware of the support services listed above.
  • Support employees who are experiencing intimidation and/or threats. Lend a listening ear and follow up regularly to see how they are doing.
  • Do you, as a supervisor, have any further questions about what you can do? Then you can also contact one of the above-mentioned support services.
