Especially for the UvA Alumni Week, the legendary Theatrum Anatomicum at Waag Futurelab on the Nieuwmarkt will open its doors. Built in 1691, the Theatrum was used by the surgeons’ guild for public dissections. It was constructed for the renowned Frederick Ruysch (1638–1731). Ruysch provided anatomical instruction to the guild, but as Professor of Botany he was also affiliated with the Athenaeum Illustre, the predecessor of the University of Amsterdam. The spectacular dissections he organised in the Theatrum earned De Waag the nickname ‘De Snijburcht’ (‘The Cutting Fortress’). Ordinary citizens were also welcome. In this lecture and presentation, Reno Raaijmakers will bring the legendary Theatrum Anatomicum back to life.
