Is our system of government in need of renewal – and if so, what must change? For many years Dutch elections were predictable. This was due to pillarisation: voters were loyal to their traditional groups. Today, however, parties rise and fall at lightning speed. Populism and technocracy dominate the stage.

Jerfi Uzman and Tom van der Meer explore the state of our democratic constitutional order. What should happen next, and which constitutional safeguards are crucial to preserving democracy?
