On 27 October, Amsterdam turns 750. And the history of the University of Amsterdam is inextricably linked to that of the city. In this walking tour, led by Reno Raaijmakers and Annette Vondra, the intertwined histories of the city and the University come to life through visits to various UvA buildings, including the Agnietenkapel, the Oudemanhuispoort, the Allard Pierson Museum and the Maagdenhuis.
We begin the tour at the University Library’s new building on the Binnengasthuis premises. The former hospital building has been lovingly restored and renovated - and spectacularly expanded. A remarkable gift to a city celebrating a milestone birthday!
Reno Raaijmakers studied Archaeology, History and Art History at the University of Amsterdam. For the past 25 years, he has organised guided tours, lectures, courses and trips through his cultural agency, Amsterdam City Walks.
