Once every two years, the cooperating Dutch universities organise the National Alumni Survey (NAE) among all recently graduated Master's students to see how they fared after graduation. Topics covered include how well they were prepared for the labour market, whether or not they have a paid job and a review of the completed Master's programme. Young alumni will soon be invited to join the new edition of the NAE.

What stood out about the results of the latest survey from 2021?

The total study population consists of all students who completed a university Master's programme at a Dutch university in the last two years. In 2021, for the UvA, these were 5,329 Master's graduates (44,933 for the Netherlands as a whole). Of these, 762 alumni completed the survey in full.
For the 2021 alumni, the effects of the coronavirus were still noticeable. Nationwide, it took them slightly longer to find paid employment than the 2019 alumni: 3.1 months versus 2.5 months in 2019. UvA alumni did spend slightly less time looking for a job in 2021 than the national average. It took them an average of 2.3 months to find a paid job.

UvA alumni earn more

UvA alumni are as likely to have a paid job as alumni of the other broad-based* universities: the percentage of respondents who have a paid job of at least 12 hours a week now stands at 96%. In terms of the level of jobs, UvA alumni score slightly lower: UvA alumni are slightly less likely to be employed at the HE level than alumni of similar broad-based universities* (85% versus 87%). This gap has been narrowing in recent years. Incidentally, they did earn more than colleagues from the other broad-based universities. The starting salary of UvA alumni averages €3,175 versus €3,033 (nationwide).

Three-quarters of alumni would choose the same programme again

Overall satisfaction with UvA Master's programmes has continued to rise over the years. UvA alumni do tend to be more critical of their Master's programme than students are, especially regarding practical skills and lecturers' knowledge of professional practice. Still, over three-quarters of respondents (77%) would recommend the completed programme and university and would choose both again.

NAE 2023 begins this autumn

The National Alumni Survey will be conducted again in autumn 2023. Master's students who completed their degree between October 2021 and September 2022 will soon receive an email invitation to participate in the survey.

*The broad-based universities are Leiden University, Radboud University, the University of Groningen, Utrecht University, Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam and the University of Amsterdam
