Rector Magnificus Peter-Paul Verbeek will open the afternoon. In his opening speech 'The Language of Science’, he will delve into the significance of multilingualism at the university, contributing to both science and society.
This year's Dies speech will be delivered by Egija Zaura, Professor of Oral Microbial Ecology and Head of the Preventive Dentistry section at the Academic Centre for Dentistry Amsterdam (ACTA). In her speech 'Let's Reintegrate the Mouth into the Body,' Zaura will discuss the mouth as an essential foundation for everyone's health.
Following the Dies speech, the honorary doctorates will be awarded. Folkert Jensma, legal editor and commentator at NRC, will receive the honorary doctorate for his significant journalistic work, in which he ceaselessly draws attention to the rule of law, the quality of everyday legal practice, and the impact this has on those seeking justice.
Zeynep Tufekci, Henry G. Bryant Professor of Sociology and Public Affairs at Princeton University and columnist for publications like the New York Times, will be awarded the honorary doctorate as a modern public intellectual for her sharp analyses on social movements and social media, among other things. Study association Machiavelli (Bachelor of Political Science) and bachelor student Chun Wai Man (Dutch Law) will pay tribute to the honorary doctors.
