De fellowships worden toegekend vanuit de Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions, die onderdeel zijn van het onderzoeks- en innovatieprogramma Horizon Europe van de Europese Unie. Doel van de subsidie is het bevorderen van de mobiliteit van veelbelovende, ervaren onderzoekers over de landsgrenzen binnen en buiten de Europese Unie. Het fellowship is persoonsgebonden.

De acht onderzoekers die hun project aan de UvA gaan uitvoeren, ontvangen elk een European Fellowship. Dit type duurt twee jaar en komt voor de meeste laureaten neer op een budget van ruim 203.000 euro.
