Gromicho’s research focuses on big data analytics, with an emphasis on prescriptive analytics and in particular mathematical optimisation. For the past ten years he served as endowed professor Applied Optimisation in Operations Research at the VU researching and teaching several mathematical optimisation domains and applications. Optimisation based on real, and large, data sets is paramount to effective Business Analytics, and is central to his new chair at the UvA. Gromicho has a passion for applications of analytics that improve not only individual businesses, but the way we deal with our planet. He believes that advanced analytics is key to reducing our collective ecological footprint.

At the UvA, Gromicho will teach courses in big data analytics, with an emphasis on (optimal) decision making. His teaching focusses on a combination of sound theoretical background and hands-on actual problems with representative data.

About Gromicho
Since 2010, Gromicho has been endowed professor of Applied Optimisation in Operations Research at the School of Business and Economics of the Vrije Universiteit, Amsterdam. Since 1996, he has worked in various positions - including latterly as Scientific Officer and Education Officer - at ORTEC, a Dutch company which supplies mathematical optimisation software and advanced analytics.

Gromicho has been active for many years within the Netherlands Society for Statistics and Operations Research, first as a board member in the Operations Research section and then as editor-in-chief of the organisation’s journal STAtOR. He is the author of the book Quasiconvex Optimisation and Location Theory from the Kluwer Applied Optimisation Series.

Gromicho has spent most of his professional life on both sides of analytics: theory and practice. That is also the role he plays as one of the coordinators of the EURO Working Group on the Practice of Operations Research.
