I graduated from East China Normal University with a bachelor’s degree in Sociology and from the University of Amsterdam with a master’s degree in Sociology: Gender, Sexuality, and Society (cum laude). My area of expertise is sexuality studies. My BA thesis is Risk, trust, and desire: A subjective interpretation of barebacking among gay men; this sociological research explores the action logics of barebacking (sex without condoms) among Chinese urban gay communities.

My MA thesis is titled Play with power: an ethnography of Chinese gay BDSM; by interacting with a Foucauldian perspective, this research focuses on eroticized power in microscopic BDSM arenas, bodily sensations in the context of Chinese urban spaces, and social power exercised through erotic digital spaces. I have shifted my attention from gay issues in urban China to LGBT movements in Dutch society in my doctoral research. Conducting the fieldwork at an Amsterdam-based nightclub for LGBT visitors, I study a commercial pleasure-seeking venue’s participation in, and mobilization of, LGBT activism in the Dutch context in the twenty-first century.
